Teeth Whitening
Teeth are stained by the foods and drinks we consume.  Smoking further stains teeth and the natural bright, white shade becomes darkened.  Teeth whitening is a process of lightening the colour of your teeth by using a bleaching process. The degree of whiteness achieved will vary from patient to patient and with the type of bleaching process chosen.

In surgery whitening requires you to attend for a single 1-2 hour session with your dentist.  During this appointment whitening gel is applied to your teeth and then activated by a gentle blue light for three 20 minute sessions.  You will leave the surgery with your teeth many shades lighter.  The effects of this whitening can last up to 18 months.

White Fillings
White fillings are now becoming popular alternative to amalgam fillings.  The new dental materials mean it is much easier to find a perfect match for the shade of a particular tooth.  In most cases, it is almost impossible to see that the tooth even has a filling.
Your appearance can be affected by missing, broken, discoloured or irregular teeth.  Cosmetic treatments such as veneers, crowns, bridges, implants, orthodontics, tooth-coloured fillings and tooth whitening can help improve your appearance.

Veneers are an ideal way of treating discoloured or unsightly teeth, closing gaps, repairing chips and cracks, and improving alignment of the teeth.  They are thin slices of porcelain that are made to fit precisely over the visible surfaces of the teeth.

Crowns may be used to repair broken or decayed teeth, to strengthen teeth or again to improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth.  They differ from veneers in that they encase the whole part of the tooth that is above the gum.  The porcelain finish of the veneer or crown can be matched to your own natural tooth shading, or if you choose to restore all of your teeth then you can decide to have a lighter, brighter shade all over.

Bridges are very useful in replacing missing teeth by using the standing teeth on either side of the gap to support the ‘false tooth’, known as a pontic.  The porcelain pontic is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in one area left by a missing tooth.  These bridges are permanently cemented in your mouth, where they can help to improve the overall appearance of your smile.  Tooth whitening can be carried out as a home procedure or as an in-surgery procedure.  Tooth whitening at home involves getting your dentist to take impressions of your teeth in order to make your bleaching stents.  These are mouthguards, into which you place the whitening gel and then you wear them for several hours per day.  You will normally reach your desired colour after several weeks.

Dental Implants offer a permanent solution for your missing teeth. A dental implant is essentially a substitute for a natural root and commonly it is screw or cylinder shaped. Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled at the precise location of the intended tooth. Often the implant can be placed at the same time as removal of the tooth all on the same day.

As well as dental implant placement, we offer a number of other specialist surgical treatments at the Practice, including the removal of painful wisdom teeth, the surgical removal or exposure of unerupted teeth often in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, periodontal surgery, and bone grafting.

Wisdom teeth
A wisdom tooth may be extracted because it is causing you problems or perhaps to prevent problems that may arise in the future.  Problems with wisdom teeth can arise because your jaw may not be large enough to accommodate them, and they may become impacted and unable to break through the gum properly.
They can break part way through your gums leaving a flap of gum tissue under which food and germs can then become trapped leading to inflammation and pain – which are also signs of infection.  More serious problems can arise from the impacted teeth such as further infection, damage to other teeth and bone, or the development of a cyst.  We can surgically remove any problematic wisdom teeth under local anaesthetic.

Unerupted teeth
Any unerupted tooth has been formed but failed to emerge into the mouth can damage surrounding teeth, gums and supporting bone.  Because of the risk unerupted teeth are often surgically extracted.  As already mentioned this is often the case with wisdom teeth.  However, it is common to find unerupted canine teeth sitting in the palate (roof of mouth).  We can pull these teeth slowly into position with the use of orthodontic appliances after surgically exposing them.

Periodontal Surgery
If you are diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease, we may suggest periodontal surgery in order to remove unhealthy/damaged gum tissue when the problem cannot be solved using non surgical cleaning of the area.

Periodontal (gum) disease, including gingivitis are serious infections affecting one or more teeth and if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss.
It starts when the bacteria in plaque (the yellowish film that builds up on teeth) cause the gums to become inflamed.  This initial information is gingivitis, which is characterised by red, swollen gums that bleed easily.  Gingivitis is usually caused by poor oral hygiene.  It is reversible with professional treatment carried out by our hygienists and good oral home care.
Long standing gingivitis can progress to periodontitis.  There are a number of types of periodontitis and they all affect the tissues supporting the teeth.  As the disease gets worse, the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw is lost, making the teeth loose as already mentioned, if untreated may lead to tooth loss.
The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, however, other factors, such as smoking, genetics, pregnancy, stress, medication, nutrition and systemic disease, eg diabetes may also play a part.   We will discuss all these factors with you in order to ascertain the causes of your periodontal disease, and therefore decide on the best treatment options for you.
If you suffer from symptoms such as bleeding gums, bad breath, bad taste, pus around the gums, loose teeth or pain, then a visit to your dentist for a full examination is recommended.
If the dentist makes a diagnosis of periodontal disease, there are a number of treatment options available.

  • Initial assessment and full mouth deep cleaning with one of the hygienists followed by a follow up assessment.
  • If a follow up assessment determines that the tissue around your teeth is still unhealthy and cannot be repaired with non-surgical treatment then we may decide that you need periodontal surgery. This may involve lifting the tissue back off the tooth and removing the disease-causing bacteria before securing the tissue back into place. In some cases, irregular surfaces of the damaged bone are smoothed to reduce the areas where bacteria can hide.

Periodontal surgery combined with good daily oral hygiene and regular hygiene visits will increase your chances of keeping your natural teeth, a result desired by both you and us.
